Superman Returns Compared DVD vs. Xbox 360 HD

January 9th, 2007 § 0 comments

I wanted to get a comparison of my DVD player setup vs. the Xbox 360 HD rentals on my TV. I decided to download Superman Returns and set up my camera to shoot a photo of both.

The TV in question is a Mitsubishi WD-65731 65″ 1080p DLP TV. The DVD player is a Panasonic DVD-S52 connected via HDMI with upconverting set to 1080i.

I tried to pause at virtually the same spot and get an identical image. The tripod and camera did not move and was shot with a remote release to avoid all shake.

The next photo was taken of the Xbox 360 connected via Component cables with the Xbox set also at 1080i. The video is HD at 720p and the Xbox 360 is performing the upconverting.

The difference is not as obvious in these photos as it is in person. I will tell you there is a definite difference in detail, especially in the CG scenes. There is an artifact that looks similar to ISO camera noise, very obvious in clothes and textures.

I will be getting the HD-DVD add on soon and will perform this same test with the standard version of King Kong and the HD-DVD version that is included, keep posted.
