How a $30 value becomes $30 wasted - Final Fantasy XI Online

Editor’s note: These are not fictional events, this is a true story.
Saturday, Dawn and I were at CompUSA when we came across a great deal. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XI - Online, for $30. We were very excited to get it at half what most Xbox 360 games cost and couldn’t wait to get a character set up and explore the Final Fantasy world online.
We stayed busy through the weekend and never got a chance to load it. Monday night, I finally sat down to play and what I found was the most miserable experience ever on the Xbox 360. Two hours of my life gone, and I literally never actually played the game.
To me, one of the main differences between console and PC gaming is the “Stick it in and play” mentality. I love that aspect of game consoles. Sure, Xbox 360 games require small updates from time to time, but I have yet to see one take more than a few minutes. My first few hours with FFXI went as follows:
I put in the DVD around 8. When what I thought would be the game was loaded, I found it was Square’s PlayOnline platform. It went through about a 10 minute install, yes, an install on the Xbox 360. After the install, there was another 10-15 minutes of downloading and installing updates to the installer. Here I was, 30 minutes in and had yet to see the game. Did I mention that there were five 20 digit codes I had to enter via USB keyboard to get this thing registered?
Next, Square wanted my credit card info, because this game costs an addition $12.95 a month on top of the $7.95 you are already paying for Xbox Live! Gold (are you kidding me!) The game came with a month of free online play, so I was still open to giving it a shot. Next it wanted to know way too much demographic information, I filled that out, it gave me a user ID like x123949932343 or something just as intuitive, and I finally saw a cut scene.
The cut scene was a gorgeous introduction to the game, it truly got Dawn and I excited to see this thing in action. The cut scene faded out and on came the next horror. The game installer screen came up and said, “60 minutes remaining.” I wish I could say it went faster than that, but I truly think 60 was conservative.
Does Square realize that my precious 20GB Hard Drive is already filled with 8GB of Xbox 360 system files? That I have already rented “A Scanner Darkly” and it’s hanging onto 1GB of space? World of Warcraft doesn’t take half that long to install. Speaking of World of Warcraft, the updates, when I finally gave up on Final Fantasy XI was after the install was finally finished, and I entered even MORE demographic information….the next screen that came up finished the deed.
3,488 updates were queued to download. Seriously, nearly 3,500 updates to download and install before I could play this game. I decided at this point that if I wanted to play an MMORPG, that I would boot up WoW on my computer and get my online groove on. I wish I could say I played it and it was great or was terrible. I have never had to give a review purely on the installer. I gave up on it at nearly 11pm. It had been close to 3 hours trying to play and I figured that was enough…give me Rainbow Six Vegas anyday…
One last note of outrage. Once you get past the point of no return and give up, keep in mind you can’t sell it. The installer mentions that once you enter that key, it’s tied to your Xbox hardware and cannot ever be untied. It’s truly yours and yours forever….my precious my ass..
Editor’s Note: I get so many comments about how I didn’t give this game a chance because of the installer, but let’s be specific, my biggest complaint is that I don’t have the ability to USE my Xbox 360 after it’s installed, no HD movie rentals, no big game demos, it FILLS your hard drive!!!
