Last week, I caught ram on sale. I bought into the hype and decided since I had just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my laptop, that I would upgrade it to 2GB of Ram and really make Vista hum.
Now if you have been keeping up with my blog, you know that I have set up two of these laptops with Windows Vista recently and have had no performance complaints with either. Both were running dual core processors (my only prerequisite for good Vista performance) and had 1GB of Ram. To be totally clear, one is an Intel Core Duo 1.73Ghz, the other an AMD Turion 64 X2 1.6Ghz.
So with a whopping 2GB of ram in my laptop, I can honestly tell no difference in performance. Sure my memory gauge shows a much nicer 26% used memory as opposed to pushing 60%, but if the laptop runs the same, what’s the point? I have put it through the paces with 1GB and 2GB running Office 2007, Photoshop, Pidgin and Filezilla at the same time and noticed no more lag. Of course with 2GB I had a lot more ram to spare, but again, if it runs the same, who cares?
I am sure over the long run I will be glad I have the extra room in the memory side of the house, but I would not recommend you run out and grab it unless you have a specific application that REALLY needs it.
