Macbook Pro – Day 2

August 15th, 2007 § 1 comment

So it’s day two of the Macbook Pro. In short, I am totally blown away, there are many things to like, a few things I don’t like, but I sure have some thoughts to share now. I have found some really great software for this thing! I have set up Parallels with Windows XP. I have customized a tad, here are my thoughts in a concise format:

  • Parallels is amazing, I get truly well integrated Windows on the Mac, and it’s fast.
  • Adium is one of the nicest multi-protocol chat clients around
  • Apple Mail is a pain to set up on GoDaddy’s domain email, but that’s GoDaddy’s fault.
  • 2 USB ports just ain’t enough folks.
  • Cyberduck is a pretty sweet little FTP client
  • Bluetooth syncing contacts with my Razr, built in…..wow
  • iLife ’08 is really slick, Magic Garage Band is terribly addictive
  • The webcam makes some really funny photos (see attached)
  • The slot loading DVD-RW is loud and sensitive to torque on the laptop
  • Windows XP/Vista installs seamlessly in Parallels
  • Did I mention two USB ports just isn’t enough?

More later folks, back to the grind…..

One last thought, trading the USB Verizon Modem in for an Express Card V740 to claim back a USB port, and getting a Bluetooth mouse to get back the other. More on that later.

Good that you like the Macbook, now convert Dawn aswell ;)

Anyway. About parallels. It’s not all good. If you want a printer installed you can’t just install it the normal way because USB ports arent working well on that end. You need Bonjour in windows (1.0.4) and share the printer on a lan on the Mac… It’s a bit dodgy but it works.
