Sometimes you pick up a game and fall in love with it. Other times you grab something at the store and instantly feel remorse and anger at the likely $15 trade in price.
Some games make you have to sit back and try and spin valuable brain cycles deciding if you actually liked it or not. To me Mass Effect would definitely have to fall into that category. As compelling and exciting as the story is, hyped as the game is, as cool as the graphics are….
Why does this game remind me of the old saying "Tying is kind of like kissing your sister?"
I mean if I had to break it down into pieces, it would probably look something like this:
- Graphics: A
- Sound: A
- Score: A
- Story: A
- Game Play: N/A
Ok, that’s pretty harsh, but I find myself in this situation with this game. It’s beautiful to look at. The score and sound are top notch. The story is compelling and I am interested. Why do I feel like I am just going through the motions to watch a story that might be better off with greasy popcorn and an annoying friend who won’t quit saying, "Watch this part, it’s awesome."
I have been playing for about 4 hours of game time. It’s not that the game isn’t fun, it’s just that the choose your own adventure style dialog and the blast anything that moves first person shooter style game play feel to me like commercials…"Learn all about spatulas, now back to our feature."
I am sure you will find many more reviews and many much better. I will probably play this game to completion which usually in my case means I like it a lot. This one isn’t "a lot", it’s just that the story is actually good enough that I am willing to sleep through the action to find out what happens.
We have about 50 Xbox 360 & PS3 games in our library. I would say I was the purchasing decision for about 10 of them, and had great interest in playing another few so in interest of fairness, here are recent games I loved. Maybe that will help you decide if you should care what I think or not.

I think this game is worth your time to check out. I just didn’t pee in my pants like some of the people I know.
i totally agree…i was forcing myself to be mindblown by the action and gameplay but i was very dissapointed…i have no choice but to wait for jade empire II…at least i know that game cant possibly dissapoint me.
