Drinking from the fire hose…

I decided to take a quick break from yet another WMV movie about Performance Point to jot out a quick blog about starting a new job. It’s the second day of my first full week on my new job and even considering myself quite "with it" there is a great deal to learn.

Of course you would expect it to be this way on any product specific job so it’s no surprise, but that’s where I thought I would share a few tips.

When you are starting a new job you will get a great wealth (hopefully) of resources to help you learn about your new position. Some are documentation, some are multimedia and some are human. I suggest you leverage them all equally and be sure to do two things.

  • Pace yourself, don’t spend too long on a particular subject or you will start to lose retention
  • Ask questions, lots of questions.

Another thing that I will mention but not share as a general tip is write about your subject. I am a blogger so I am used to writing, but it always helps me make sure I am learning if I can explain it to someone else.

Microsoft, like any other job is challenging at the start and one might be quick to get discouraged or question themselves if they allow themselves to get overwhelmed. Manage your education just as you would your workload later and you should be fine.
